MUSIC TO MY EARS. SINCE 1946. Once upon a time, there were four brothers who had talent, ideas, courage and a vision. What sounds like the beginning of a fairy tale was the venture of the brothers Kazuo, Tadao, Toshio and Yukio Kashio that they began in 1946, just one year after the end of WWII. Their shared idea was to develop, produce and be successful with electronic and digital technology. But one vision originated from the enthusiastic amateur musician Toshio, whose biggest dream was to create electronic musical instruments that were also affordable for hobby musicians. After their first success with the first electric relay-based desk calculator in 1957, the first inkjet printer and the first pocket calculator were created during the early 1970s. After the still-popular line of CASIOTRON wristwatches was launched in the mid-1970s, causing the great coup on the watch market, Toshio decided that the time had come: they had gathered enough experience and had the technology advanced enough to realise his original vision. By early1978, the Kashio brothers, under the leadership of Toshio, began to revolutionize the market for electronic musical equipment. By realizing new ideas, smaller devices and innovative technologies, they pursued their goal of achieving a price-performance ratio that allowed musicians to experience the delight in creativity and music on a modest budget and within their own four walls. In 1980, CASIO reached their goal with the launch of CASIOTONE 201, the first portable keyboard ever, thus setting a new standard for the future. With the device's capacity to make 49 different sounds, success was not long in coming. One year later, the mini-keyboard VL-1 used by TRIO’s Stephan Remmler to produce the worldwide hit song “Da Da Da”, proving that high-quality does not need to be expensive or big. The 16bit sampling synthesizer FZ-1 definitely started the new era that allowed amateurs to participate in the big music business – without having to spend the equivalent of a new car. That is how Toshio’s dream became reality – and it is still CASIO’s production and development philosophy. From beginner keyboards and affordable digital pianos to professional synths and stage instruments, CASIO devices offer quality products and creative possibilities at an affordable price. With 70 million musical instruments sold, CASIO is present all over the world and has reached a point today that Toshio could never have predicted.
