Suba Sankaran is a DORA award-winning, twice JUNO-nominated (Canadian equivalent of a Grammy award) musician whose career began at an early age while studying South Indian classical singing and percussion with her father, master drummer Trichy Sankaran. She graduated from York University in 1997, where she studied jazz, early music, world music and contemporary improvisation, and completed her Master of Arts degree in Ethnomusicology in 2002. Suba is artistic director of the award-winning Indo-jazz fusion ensemble Autorickshaw and regularly performs with other world music groups including Trichy’s Trio and most recently with the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan and premiere percussion ensemble NEXUS, to name a few. She crosses genres with the FreePlay Duo, and sings the top 40s of the 80s with all a cappella revue Retrocity. She effortlessly combines musical worlds, spanning several centuries and genres, and has performed across Canada, the US, Europe, UK and India. Highlights include performing for Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu and Peter Gabriel. Suba is in demand as a private teacher, educator, choral director, arranger, adjudicator and composer and has given numerous workshops to choirs around the world. She has composed, recorded and produced Bollywood-inspired music for theatre, film, radio, and for south Indian and modern dance. Recent highlights include collaborations with Oscar-nominee Deepa Mehta. Suba's most recent projects with Autorickshaw and new collaborator Anita Majumdar include composing new and original Bollywood music. These songs have been featured in her recent creations Bollywood and Beyond and East-West Musical Masala with strings and brass band. Suba has performed on numerous recordings and film soundtracks and has been recorded in many contexts by CBC Radio. She has received several awards for her musical accomplishments.

Autorickshaw's music lies on the cultural cutting edge, as contemporary jazz and funk unite with the classical and popular music of India. Formed in 2003, Autorickshaw is one of the most intriguing acts on the world music landscape, garnering two JUNO nominations for World Music Album of the Year, winner of the 2005 Canadian Independent Music Award, winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Competition in 2007 and most recently awarded CAPACOA’s Touring Artist of the Year. The ensemble consists of a mash-up of four of Canada’s most exciting and musically interesting young musicians: vocalist Suba Sankaran, tabla player Ed Hanley, bassist Rich Brown and exotic percussionist Patrick Graham. "All four have achieved excellence on their respective instruments, and when their forces are combined, the results are utterly unique and musically pioneering”. -Daniel Ariaratnam, The Record Autorickshaw has toured extensively across Canada, including appearances at the Montreal, Vancouver, Guelph, Calgary and Toronto Jazz Festivals, the Vancouver and Winnipeg Folk Festivals, The Glenn Gould Studio, The Stratford Festival and the Sound Symposium in Newfoundland to name a few. International performances include Yoshi’s in San Francisco, performances in Oakland and Reno, Nevada, Joe’s Pub in New York City and the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, The Stockholm Jazz Festival in Sweden and dates across India including Chennai and Bangalore, at the Congo Square Jazz Festival in Kolkata, and at the prestigious Jaipur International Heritage Festival in Rajasthan. In 2009, Autorickshaw completed a 6-week tour of Europe and UK, including performances in London, Belfast, Prague, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Paris. Widely reviewed and profiled in mainstream Canadian media, Autorickshaw has also been featured internationally, including on NPR’s Weekend America, in Global Rhythm Magazine and All About Jazz (USA); World Music Magazine (Italy), fRoots (UK), Rave Magazine and The Hindu (India); Deutschland Radio Kultur (Germany) as well as appearing at #14 on the World Music Charts Europe. Autorickshaw’s 4th CD is currently in production. Upcoming events include an artist residency at the Banff Centre, Alberta, a tour/collaboration of Bollywood-inspired music with the Foothills Brass Quintet in Alberta, and further afield, a collaboration with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra including new and original Bollywood music and soundtrack to silent film.
