This is indeed a step towards the betterment of giving proper credits to the artists involved. I am sure this will benefit Indian music scene a lot ! - Kuhoo Gupta

Is a United Front for the Vocalists and Singers really needed in India? What goes to say that someday they wouldn't challenge the collection societies by forming their own society thus making the licensing of music to various other platforms like Radio, Television, etc all the more difficult

In most scenarios singers/vocalists are the easiest to work with in terms of licensing music to various platforms. This could primarily be due to the fact that they are individuals. But I'd have to say I share a similar concern on the point you have raised Sudhir about the industry being adversely affected should they come together as a society.

Corina, most singers, vocalists and composers would still part away with their rights for pittance and that's where this issue arises. This community of creatives lacks a lot of awareness with respect to Intellectual Property and their copyright. That is essentially the root cause of all the problems in India. Folks like Javed Akhtar are rallying for this cause but we need more volunteers like him to create a sense of COPYRIGHT and COPYLEFT awareness amongst the Indian music community. There sure are a few loopholes in the system which tend to give the opportunity to some stakeholders to exploit the community of composers and lyricists. But that still does not take away the fact that India still has a single window clearance for licensing. Something that most western countries still lack. At a time when the whole world is exploring opportunities to harness the digital market, the Indian music community is still fighting amongst themselves as to who is the rightful owner of music that has been created ages ago. Instead of cultivating fresh talent (read non bollywood), should we first settle this fight?? Or should we all move on and understand how we can all as one single Indian Music community make revenues from this digital wave that's sweeping India? Like always lets not miss this bus !!!
