Personal profile

Born in Toronto, Irene began her professional musical career at the age of 19, while studying history at the University of Toronto. During that time, Atman sang with the Stan Hiltz Orchestra, recorded with the Boss Brass and performed with Tony Bennett. She also has performed with Canadian jazz greats Guido Basso (Order of Canada) Dave Young (Order of Canada), Peter Appleyard (Order of Canada) and Terry Clarke (Order of Canada). In 2007, Irene focused on promoting her self-titled debut CD release in Canada and internationally, performing in Canada, the US, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Hong Kong. Over the past 2 years, Irene has signed distribution and licensing deals with Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Thailand, Macau, Hong Kong and China. In 2008, Irene performed at the Canadian embassy in Tokyo Japan for A Tribute to Oscar Peterson, where she was on the same bill as Holly Cole, Makoto Ozone and Dion Taylor. Irene Atman was also nominated for an Ontario Independent Music Award for the song “Shall We Dance?” from her self-titled CD and performed at the 2008 Roger's Canadian Music Week. She was also part of the Jazz 91.1 FM Concert Series, as a feature performer for the Tribute to Peggy Lee. Relocating to New York City in the summer of 2009, Irene recorded her second CD, entitled “New York Rendezvous”, which has been critically acclaimed both here in Canada and the United States, getting regular airplay with high rotation on CBC Radio programs such as “Hear & Now” , “Fresh Air” and on Canadian’s 24 hours jazz station JAZZ FM 91.1. “New York Rendezvous is an exceptional addition to the vocal jazz contingency. Atman has much to say and she says it perfectly. Atman has perfected the malleable harmony line, her voice stretching and contracting effortlessly in all four dimensions, defying the quantum mechanics of sonics.” -C. Michael Bailey…All About Jazz Having just returned from a triumphant tour in Asia, which included sold out concerts in Thailand, Hong Kong and Taipei, Irene recently celebrated her homecoming to Toronto with a sold out show at the Home Smith Bar, The Old Mill and a major concert at the Jane Mallett Theatre where her special guest was Canada’s premiere jazz musician, Guido Basso on flugelhorn, Dave Young on bass, Robi Botos on piano, Rob Piltch on guitar and Ethan Ardelli on drums. It was a huge success for Irene and received national and international media attention. “Irene Atman’s performance at the St. Lawrence Centre for the arts in the Jane Mallett Theatre was breathtaking and it was a world class performance, in a venue whose acoustic qualities are well suited to an artist with such outstanding gifts”. - -Joe Montague…..Riveting Riffs Magazine, US Irene Atman is also a singer/songwriter, having being trained on classical piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She is now writing her own original songs as well as collaborating with other writers and will soon be recording her 3rd CD early next year to be released internationally and here in Canada. Having just signed a new deal with a major record label in China, plans are underway for Irene to perform at this year’s Expo in Shanghai with another major tour throughout Asia. Already a phenomenon there, with a feature in Hello Magazine, Thailand, Irene Atman is eager to affect North American audiences in the same way. With a voice that transcends all borders, “Irene Atman has a storybook perfect pitch able to touch the listener’s soul, understand the sorrows that burrow in their hearts, stroke their sensibilities with tender caresses and lick their wounds. She has a voice that can make the hardest soul melt in her lap” – JazzReview, May 2009
