Rafique Shaikh is a "hope" and a "promise" afresh to all those music loving community and connoisseurs who have become disillusioned with the changing form and content of Indian music.He provides refreshing hope on authentic Ghazal singing and promises a journey into the world of rich Urdu poetry. Born at Belgaum in Karnataka,Rafique took his initial lessons in classical music from late Mohd.Hussain Khan of Pune and later went under the tutelage of Pt.Jay Dayal of Delhi.But,it is his love with Urdu poetry and irresistible gazal singing which made him to make a career in Gazal singing.And no wonder if he has carved a niche for himself in the world of gazal singing in a very short period of time.That he sacrificed the comforts attached with the Bank officer's post(Mumbai) to devote his rest of the life to what is a highly melodious and wonderful component of Indian music,only points at his deep involvement and commitment to his chosen field. He has performed live all over India,holds the audience spellbound and takes them into a world of fantasy.Although,he started his musical journey by singing film songs,his tryst with gazal-singing is welcome facet of this multi-talented singer.His live performance at the All India Marathi Ghazal Conference held at Aurangabad,in 2004 is a testimony to the fact that his ongoing experimentation with Marathi gazals(also in other languages such as Kannada) has been well received both by poets and critics.A soft melodious and with rich tonal quality and ability to explore into the deeper aspects and grammer of music,bringing to fore the inherent emotional features in the poetry makes him a true gazal singer.An approved A.I.R artist,performed live on Chandana T.V and DD 1(Kannada Gazals) also. A connoisseurs delight and those of the shaayars as well,Rafique has to his credit recordings with legends like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle.A creative music director and composer in him is well reflected in the two audio cassettes,one each on Marathi titled "Paus Pahila" and "Neene" in Kannada hav hit the market,almost instantly.His project on Urdu gazals is in the pipeline and promises a rich bouquet.
